A BIT OF HISTORY… or, ANDREW CARNEGIE --- PLEASE COME HELP! But he can't. Mr. Carnegie had the library built in 1913 -- he's died since then! He didn't leave a trust fund for maintenance, upgrading, or anything. He couldn't foresee OSHA, disabilities-law compliance, computers or the neighborhood's crying need for a modern-day Library. Now it’s up to us -- everyone of us. The City is doing its share – paying for construction. But (you’ll be surprised to hear) there’s a shortfall. And because of that, there's lots of equipment to buy. That’s our dilemma – how do we pay for all that? Well, we’re not asking for much, just a donation. Here are the details: The South Norwalk Branch Library , part of the Norwalk Public Library System, was built in 1913 as one of 2,000 libraries funded by Andrew Carnegie. It serves the South Norwalk community, the City of Norwalk, and beyond. The $4.4 million renovation is underway --with expected completion early 2006.The renovation has been planned for the past 8 years.THE PLAN:~$3.3 million dollar renovation — 3,691 square foot addition including:~New elevator, book drop, restroom facilities;~New stairs to access all three floors;~2nd Floor Grand Meeting Room and north stair;~Additional book stack space,;~Children’s program room;~Complete compliance with all codes and handicapped accessibility guidelines;~New entry on the west side with a lobby that will allow for the display of artwork;~A larger more efficient parking lot with drop-off area;~Improved landscaping, new flag pole and bike rack;~Renovated historic building exterior and interior that preserves the beauty of the original building which is on the National Historic Register;~New adult computer room ;~New children’s computer room and computer lab;~New young adult room with books, computers and audio visual equipment;;~Larger Circulation Desk with new staff work room;~New mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, fire protection and building security, and added structural reinforcement;~Complete hazardous material removal;~Larger children’s library.SO, WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP? TO COVER THE “SHORTFALL”Our goal is to raise a minimum of $250,000 to cover the “shortfall” between the approved City/District/State Budget and the costs of computers, related hardware, cost of installation and associated equipment. |
